Social Enrichment Groups
Recreation is the 4th "R" (after, Reading, Riting and 'Rithmetic)
For some children and adults, socialization and recreation are best realized in the context of recreational activity. Since 1990, Bridges Associates' community-based programs have provided a therapeutic milieu in a recreational setting without the stigmatizing label of group therapy.
Each of the programs below use the Take Charge!™ Model, developed
at Bridges through demonstration and pilot projects since 1990. We
are currently seeking to replicate these models in other locations.

The Bridging Out Program is a
therapeutic recreation program for adults with significant neurodevelopmental
disorders. The group is professionally led and has met continuously
since 1990. Members learn to plan social activities, raise funds to
support their projects, and develop job skills. During 2005 the members
of this innovative program are learning skills to help them publish
and produce Take Charge!™ curriculum materials.
Take Charge!™ Coaching, since 1993,
is a strength-based program for both individuals and groups. The individual
approach teaches self-awareness and/or homework-organizational skills
. In a group program Take Charge!™ Coaching features project-based
learning and socialization. Group programs are held in schools, offices
and community settings.
The Riding Outreach Program was offered in collaboration with
Sea Horse Farm in Harwich, MA. Between 1999 and 2004 the program offered
horseback riding, barn work and a social enrichment group for students
who love horses and riding. By encouraging student abilities in a
social context, confidence and learning improve. Sadly the program
ended in 2004 when the barn was sold. In 2005 one of the adult volunteers
expects to continue the program on Cape Cod.
